Bernd Irlenbusch is Professor of Corporate Development and Business Ethics at the University of Cologne. His research interests center on behavioral foundations of (un-)ethical behavior with a focus on social norms, image concerns, and biases.
Since 2019 he is a Principal Investigator in the research areas of Market & Values and Organizational Design & Behavior in ECONtribute: Markets & Public Policy which is funded as a Cluster of Excellence in the German Excellence Strategy under the roof of the Reinhard Selten Institute. In addition, since 2015, he is a research group leader within the Center for Social and Economic Behavior (C-SEB) at the University of Cologne. Furthermore, he is a member of the scientific advisory board of the association of German compliance managers.
Bernd Irlenbusch studied computer science (Diplom Informatiker, 1992), economics (Diplom Volkswirt, 1994), and business administration (Diplom Kaufmann, 1996). He received his Ph.D. in 2000 from the University of Bonn with a thesis on "Behavior Governed by Non-binding Contracts – Theory and Experimental Observations". The thesis was awarded the Heinz-Sauermann Dissertation Prize. After teaching and research at the newly founded, interdisciplinary Faculty of Law, Social Sciences & Economics at the University of Erfurt, he joined the London Schoof of Economics and Political Science as a Lecturer. He was promoted to a tenured Reader in the Department of Management. In 2010 he was appointed a professor at the University of Cologne.
